Can you whiten teeth if you have crowns or fillings?

The short answer

You may be able to whiten your natural teeth when you have crowns or fillings, but those restorations will not bleach to match. An examination should identify the visible materials and your desired shade before treatment. Otherwise, whitening can make an existing color difference more noticeable.

Restorative materials do not respond to peroxide the same way natural tooth structure does. A crown, veneer, or composite filling can remain its original color while adjacent teeth lighten. Whitening also does not correct every cause of a dark tooth, so a single tooth that changes color deserves assessment rather than repeated bleaching.

If you are planning new visible restorations, discuss the sequence before their color is chosen. The dentist can explain whether whitening should occur first and when the final shade should be assessed. There is no reason to assume every existing filling needs replacement simply because you want a brighter smile. The decision should consider its condition, visibility, and the importance of any mismatch to you.

Bring photographs that show the color issue, and tell the office which teeth have crowns, veneers, or bonding if you know. Ask for separate estimates for bleaching and any optional restorative changes. This prevents a cosmetic whitening decision from quietly becoming a much larger treatment plan. Johns Creek Family Dentistry offers whitening alongside restorative and cosmetic care, so the consultation can address the overall result rather than selecting a whitening product in isolation.
